On October 13, 2024, SpaceX conducted its fifth and most ambitious Starship flight test, marking significant progress toward the spacecraft’s goal of becoming fully and rapidly reusable. This test was groundbreaking as it featured the first successful catch of the Super Heavy booster by the “Mechazilla” chopstick arms of the launch and catch tower at Starbase, a feat that had been in development for years.
The flight began with a seamless liftoff and ascent, followed by a hot-staging maneuver for stage separation—an innovative method where Starship’s engines ignited while still attached to the booster, ensuring a smooth transition to the upper stage. The booster executed its boostback burn and coast phase before initiating the landing burn, culminating in a historic catch by Mechazilla. This operation required thousands of coordinated systems and rigorous criteria, showcasing SpaceX’s engineering precision.
Meanwhile, the Starship upper stage continued its trajectory into space, completing a controlled reentry over the Indian Ocean. It managed the phases of peak heating and maximum aerodynamic pressure before performing its iconic “belly flop” and final flip maneuver for a successful splashdown.
The entire mission, which lasted 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 40 seconds, underscored SpaceX’s strides in reusability and cost-effective space travel, paving the way for future long-term missions, including potential journeys to Mars.
